Поэт, один из лидеров поколения битников [Beat Generation] 50-х гг. и "контркультуры" [counterculture] 60-х гг. В 1948 окончил Колумбийский университет [Columbia University], где сдружился с Дж. Керуаком [Kerouac, Jack] и У. Берроузом [Burroughs, William]. Основная тема ранней лирики - духовная ущербность современного человека, пребывающего в состоянии войны с самим собой, трещина "в массовом сознании Америки". Известность поэту принесла книга "Вопль и другие стихи" ["Howl and Other Poems"] (1956), ставшая первым явлением сан-францисского "поэтического возрождения" и манифестом битников [Beatniks, the]; поэма характеризуется самим поэтом как "огромная печальная комедия из безумных фраз и бессмысленных образов". Популярность Гинсберга резко возросла в начале 60-х, он много путешествовал, участвовал в антивоенном движении [antiwar movement], увлекался буддизмом. Выпустил сборники "Каддиш" ["Kaddish and Other Poems"] (1961), "Сгустки реальности" ["Reality Sandwiches"] (1963). Итог творчества 60-х - сборник "Падение Америки" ["The Fall of America"] (1972, Национальная книжная премия [National Book Award]). Гинсберг сначала диктовал свои стихи, а позже переносил на бумагу, максимально точно фиксируя паузы и ритм дыхания, стараясь передать читателю состояние пророческого экстаза. В поздних стихах - "Душа дышит" ["Mind Breathes"] (1977) и "Ода Плутонию" ["Plutonian Ode"] (1981) - горечь и самоирония несостоявшегося пророка, ощущение человеческой слабости. В 1984 поэт издал сборник "Избранные стихи" [Collected Poems, 1947-80]
